October 24, 2011 - uber strategically develops the Walrus...

Over the past couple of months, the uber team have been super-busy working with their first public sector client, Merseytravel to develop their new Walrus card ticketing system, creating a sophisticated, bespoke card loyalty program that encourages easy, cost effective travel for commuters in Liverpool.

The first of its kind outside London, the Walrus card is an electronic smartcard that allows public transport users, as well as day trippers to the city, to use a single card for all their journeys. The card can be used on bus, rail or ferry or even to grab a coffee!

Using their specific knowledge and vast experience in customer relations and incentive driven loyalty schemes, uber got to know the people of Merseyside, creating focus groups, online surveys and hands on market research, to get to grips with travellers in the city.

Speaking about the challenge, uber MD, Sarah Cross, explains: “Getting to know the customer was key. Whilst it’s important for us to create a programme to reflect the client’s brand, we want to provide the customer with what they want.

As with every business, Merseytravel were conscious of their objectives, so as experts in business, we had their goals in mind when conducting our research and creating our proposition.

We’re looking forward to hearing what the Walrus will do for the city, Merseytravel, and more importantly, what this will mean for its travellers.”

uber’s flexible, hands on approach allowed them to meet Merseytravel’s business objectives by providing the relevant research and loyalty recommendations that will be implemented in phase two of the project.

Speaking about the relationship, Louise Curran, Project Manager for Smart & Integrated Ticketing at Merseytravel, said:

“We needed an insight into our customer base that would provide a more personalised relationship and add value to our proposition and therefore drive sales and reward travellers. uber was key to this and we’re looking forward to seeing the results of this exciting stage in Merseytravel’s history.”
